Myth#1: You need to have a FLAT belly for this dance form
TRUTH: Unlike some other dance forms, belly dance accepts women of all shapes and sizes. It's not about having a particular physique. As belly dance uses the entire body, from head to toe, not just the belly; belly size is irrelevant.
If you are still conscious about your body type, that's all the more reason to get started considering the many health benefits of belly dancing!
Still not convinced? Well you don't have to dance for an audience. You can dance just for you, or just for your friends, or just for your pet!
Myth#2: You need to be a good dancer/have prior dance experience to embrace belly dance.
TRUTH: No prior dance experience is required. This dance form develops several physical qualities - including grace, co-ordination and flexibility. If you are looking at honing these skills, then belly dance is the perfect solution!
Myth#3 Belly dance costumes are revealing.
TRUTH: Some costumes can be but many costumes also cover large part or all of the body. It really comes down to preference and the type of outfit and costume you prefer.
Myth#3: Belly dancing results in a flat stomach.
TRUTH: Shimmying, wiggling and undulating your belly provides a solid core workout and could help you lose fat, if you combine it with healthy eating and other cardiovascular exercise. On its own, however, belly dancing alone won't give you a flat stomach.
Myth#4: Belly dance is pursued only by young girls.
TRUTH: Belly dance does not discriminate on the basis of age; there is absolutely no age limit to giving belly dancing a try and reaping its benefits.
